An odd proposal given the fact that there is no category at UNESCO for gastronomy. The whole proposal wreaks of pompousness. Such a proposal suggests that some inside France think that French food can't stand on its own merits and needs an outside authority to say that it is special. French insecurity may come from that fact that its neighbor Spain is stealing much of the food spotlight away from it. Now is not the time to cry, whine, and beg, rather, it is the time to innovate.
"[Sarkozy] said he wanted France to be the first country in the world whose gastronomy would be formally recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)."
