The Firestorm Over Private Museums

"Collectors looking to show off their riches used to donate their art to a museum. Now many are building their own museums instead, and directors at existing institutions are up in arms."

Facts:

*There are fewer than 100 private museums in the U.S., some dating back almost a century.

*At many major museums, about 5% of the collection is on view at any time.

*The number of art objects donated to top museums fell 5.7% to 77,012 last year over the previous year. However, the value of those donations increased 130% to almost $607 million, due to the rising art market.
